<p>Usually, a raphe in field pea (<i>Pisum sativum</i> L.) seed is present as a rudimentary scar, considered as a water movement controlling track inside the seed. Among approximately 497 field pea genotypes developed through conventional breeding, seeds with an open raphe were only observed in genotype IPFR 24-18. This is the first report in field pea where a seed has such a prominent open raphe. To understand the implications of such traits, we compared the water uptake and seed germination efficiency of this genotype with other recently released high-yielding cultivars. The water uptake studies showed that this open raphe genotype had significantly higher initial moisture imbibing ability (&gt; 50%) as compared to other varieties (&lt; 20%). There were no significant differences in final seed germination recorded, however, the open raphe genotype expressed faster germination as it took significantly less time for initiation of germination (15.9&#xa0;h), to achieve 50% germination (28.2&#xa0;h), mean germination time (28.1) as compared to other varieties. Such genotypes may have the advantage and perform well under moisture-stress-prone situations, especially in rice-fallow areas or areas where winter sowing is usually performed on residual moisture of the rainy season.</p>
