<p>This study evaluates heavy metal bioaccumulation potential of two green filamentous algae species, <i>Cladophora glomerata</i> (L.) Kütz. and <i>Rhizoclonium</i> sp., found in Ganga river. Elevated concentrations of Pb (0.60 ± 0.17&#xa0;mg/L), Cu (0.42 ± 0.05&#xa0;mg/L), and Cr (0.78 ± 0.13&#xa0;mg/L) were detected in the river. Both species showed significant metal uptake, Pb (1.79 ± 0.09&#xa0;mg/g, and 3.05 ± 0.37&#xa0;mg/g), Cu (0.77 ± 0.04&#xa0;mg/g and 0.72 ± 0.04&#xa0;mg/g), and Cr (5.49 ± 0.43&#xa0;mg/g and 0.70 ± 0.05&#xa0;mg/g), respectively. Bioaccumulation factor analysis revealed very high accumulation of Cr in <i>Cladophora</i> and Pb in <i>Rhizoclonium</i>. Significant correlations between Cr in river and <i>Cladophora</i> (r = 0.93, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) and between Pb in river and <i>Rhizoclonium</i> (r = 0.89, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) underscore their responsiveness to ambient contamination. The findings highlight the species-specific potential of these algae as effective agents of biomonitoring and bioremediation for Cr and Pb, which can contribute to improved environmental monitoring and pollution management in the Ganga River.</p>
