Biology and Incidence of Mango Blossom Midge, Procontarinia mangiferae (Felt): A Potential Pest of Mango Cultivation in India

Mango is affected by various insect pests throughout its growth stages, from seedling to fruiting. Among them, the blossom midge, Procontarinia mangiferae has emerged as a serious pest, causing significant yield losses in southern India. However, the biological characteristics, seasonal incidence, and natural enemy population are poorly understood. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to address these knowledge gaps. The incubation period was 2.48 ± 0.10 days, the larval period 8.20 ± 0.16 days, and the pupal period 6.00 ± 0.15 days. Adult longevity was 2.52 ± 0.12 days for females and 1.68 ± 0.10 days for males. Fecundity was recorded as 142.12 ± 0.98 eggs per female. The morphometric measurements of the egg were 0.47 ± 0.00 mm in length and 0.25 ± 0.00 mm in breadth. The pupa measured 0.79 ± 0.04 mm in length and 0.40 ± 0.05 mm in breadth. Infestation began in second fortnight of December and continued until second fortnight of March. The most prevalent symptom observed was right-angle bending of the inflorescence, accompanied by drying of the sepals and petals. Subsequently, the buds failed to develop, and the inflorescences became stunted and malformed. As a result of severe infestation, the affected mango trees were unable to produce fruit. Deformed fruits were collected and stored to observe parasitoid emergence. The parasitoid that emerged from the larvae was identified as Aprostocetus sp. (Eulophidae: Hymenoptera). The present study provides detailed information on blossom midge will be useful in formulating effective management strategies against P. mangiferae.
