<p>We have evaluated the effects of capsaicin on the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and kinetics in rat erythrocytes. The AChE activity is significantly increased in capsaicin treated rats as compared to control. There is significant alteration in Vmax. The mean value of V<sub>max</sub> for the enzyme was observed to be considerably increased in capsaicin treated rat erythrocytes (V<sub>max</sub>, 80.12&#xa0;µM) as compared to control (V<sub>max</sub>, 51.52&#xa0;µM). However, the K<sub>m</sub> values showed no noticeable change. Our result suggests that capsaicin affects membrane properties through a non-receptor based mechanism which is different from its neuronal effects.</p>
