<p>The pencil shell terebrid gastropod <i>Duplicaria franknolfi</i> Terryn, 2021, was previously documented for the first time only in the southeastern Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. However, our recent analysis of macrobenthic hauls from investigations conducted between 2017 and 2023 has revealed the species’ occurrence in the shallow estuarine waters and intertidal mudflats of Odisha along India’s east coast. This marks the first report of <i>D. franknolfi</i> outside its established range, indicating a northward extension of approximately 1530&#xa0;km in the Bay of Bengal. The observed range expansion can be primarily attributed to focused sampling efforts previously inadequate in this part of the coastal region. Furthermore, potential environmental changes may have influenced the species’ movement into new habitats, thus emphasizing the importance of comprehensive macrobenthic sampling strategies and the possible impacts of ecological factors on species distribution. Herein, we describe the species obtained from coastal Odisha, focusing on its unique shell morphology and key features that distinguish it from other species within the <i>Duplicaria</i> genus. Our findings delineate distinctive morphological characteristics that enhance species identification. Furthermore, the novelty of this investigation lies in providing previously little-known ecological aspects of the species’ habitat, which can contribute to understanding its environmental preferences and the impacts of environmental shifts on marine species distribution in the Bay of Bengal.</p>
