Identification and Characterization of Pseudomonas Guariconensis (MKCP-9) Strain Isolated from Chickpea Rhizosphere in India: Biocontrol and Plant Growth Promotion (PGP) Potential Against Wilt Disease of Pulses

Fusarium wilt is an economically most important disease of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) and pigeonpea [(Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] It causes a huge loss in their production and productivity and is very difficult to control with chemical-based fertilizers and pesticides. Biological control is an eco-friendly, viable approach for sustainable plant disease management. In this context, a noble bacterial strain, i.e., Pseudomonas guariconensis (MKCP-9) was characterized and identified, which showed 78.0% and 77.0% mycelial inhibition of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri and Fusarium udum, respectively. Biochemical characterization of this isolate was done for estimating PGPR traits like ammonia production, zinc solubilization, siderophore production, phosphate production, etc. Based on the morphological, biochemical, and molecular data, this isolate was found to be P. guariconensis. On the basis of a literature survey and findings, this is the first report of P. guariconensis (MKCP-9), identified from chickpea rhizosphere for the management of Fusarium wilt diseases and enhances plant growth promotion (PGP) of pigeonpea and chickpea. Further, it can grow up to a temperature range of 42 °C and up to 6% salt concentration.
