Numerical Investigation on Pile–Soil–Structure Interaction Using Response Spectrum Method

The pile foundation is important for structures that are expected to bear different static loads from permanent structures and the dynamic loads from the seismic activities. They are used in various domains some of which include high rise structures, bridges and offshore structures which are usually subjected to enormous static and dynamic loads. In this paper, analysis of pile–soil–structure interaction (PSSI) under seismic loads through response spectrum method is attempted taking soft, medium and hard soils. Based on numerical analysis made with ANSYS, it is found that the total deformation, base reaction and the base shear reduce gradually to roughly 27% as the seismic zone varies from Zone V to Zone II. In Soft Soil, the total deformations are enhanced from 66.83 mm in II zone to 240.49 mm in V zone. The results of this study therefore suggest that more attention should be paid to design requirements peculiar to various seismic zones to enhance the safe installation of pile-supported structures. Specific studies of seismic hazards for various sites are necessary for selecting the most efficient type of pile foundations in the seismically sensitive area.
