Material Evaluation for Shear Walls in (G+17) Residential Buildings Across Indian Seismic Zones using ETABS 2021

This study evaluates the performance of three different shear wall materials—Reinforced Concrete (RC), Steel (Fe345), and Concrete Block in a (G+17) residential building across Indian seismic zones III, IV, and V. Using ETABS 2021 software and the Equivalent Static Method as per IS 1893-2016, the research analyzes the optimized central core shear wall configuration determined in a previous study. Key parameters examined include story displacement, story stiffness, and fundamental time period. Results indicate that RC shear walls consistently outperform steel and concrete block alternatives across all seismic zones, achieving minimum story displacements of 8.5 mm, maximum story stiffness of 3,029,274 kN/m, and a fundamental time period of 0.834 s. Compared to Steel and Concrete Block shear walls, RC walls demonstrated 30–40% higher stiffness and 15–20% lower displacements across all seismic zones. The study provides valuable insights for structural engineers and architects, offering evidence-based recommendations for shear wall material selection in high-rise residential buildings across various seismic regions in India.
