First Assessment of Epifaunal Biodiversity Associated with Gracilaria eucheumatoides Harvey, Reappeared After Two Decades in South Andaman Coast, India

Studies on the associated epifaunal diversity from red algae are limited in India. The current study was carried to assess the epifaunal assemblage from red algae Gracilaria eucheumatoides Harvey (Hydropuntia eucheumatoides (Harvey) Gurgel & Fredericq 2004), which has reemerged after 26 years in the south Andaman coast. There are no reports on associated fauna with this seaweed from Indian waters. A small patch of G. eucheumatoides was recently found at Corbyn’s Cove in November 2022 and was not observed at any other stations surveyed during this 2-year period 2022–2024. This seaweed patch weighed 17.619 g wet weight, 2.829 g dry weight, and has 14.79% of moisture content. The associated macrofauna observed were gastropods Cerithium echinatum (n = 1), Euplica scripts (n = 1), and Majoidea crab, Menaethius sp. (n = 1). The abundant meiofaunal groups recorded were Harpacticoida (n = 68) and Nematoda (n = 35), followed by polychaeta (n = 9) and amphipoda (n = 7). Whereas, Tanaidacea and Foraminifera (n = 3) and Ostracoda (n = 2) were less abundant. This study presents first time data of the biomass of G. eucheumatoides and its associated epifauna from South Andaman.
