<p>The spectral characteristics of natural rubber plantations (<i>Hevea brasiliensis</i>) were investigated using atmospherically corrected surface reflectance of Sentinel 2 (Level 2A)-based spectral indices and their relationships with canopy chlorophyll content were developed using field data. In the tropical climate of the study area, rubber trees re-foliate fully between February and March, making the time period ideal for mapping rubber plantations. The total area of mature rubber plantations in the study area was estimated to be about 1,04,199&#xa0;ha. The spectral indices based on Sentinel 2 data such as the green Chlorophyll Index (CI<sub>green</sub>), red-edge Chlorophyll Index (CI<sub>red-edge</sub>), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) were studied to develop their relationship with the canopy chlorophyll content of rubber trees. Field measurements of canopy chlorophyll content in rubber plantations showed a good relationship with the Sentinel 2 derived green Chlorophyll Index (CI<sub>green</sub>) with the highest R<sup>2</sup> value of 0.72 (RMSE = 0.16) compared to the red-edge Chlorophyll Index (CI<sub>red-edge</sub>) (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.69; RMSE = 0.17), NDVI (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.54; RMSE = 0.16) and EVI (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.42; RMSE = 0.15). The feasibility of the present findings for mapping and predicting the canopy chlorophyll content of rubber plantations, mainly based on the green Chlorophyll Index (CI<sub>green</sub>) and red-edge Chlorophyll Index (CI<sub>red-edge</sub>) of Sentinel 2 are discussed in the paper. It also discusses the potential use of the study for monitoring leaf diseases in rubber plantations, particularly symptoms that severely affect the canopy, using spectral indices of satellite data, drones and machine learning.</p>
