<p>The impact of pomegranate peel, wheat germ cake, tangerine peel, almond oil cake, banana peel, and rice bran as the sole source of nutrition on the metabolic profiles and biological activity of the endophytic fungus <i>Cadophora</i> sp. (strain MERV20-1) isolated from the marine sponge <i>Negombata magnifica</i> was evaluated. A variety of active metabolic substances containing phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, terpenes, glycosides, anthocyanins, saponins, phlobatanins, anthraquinones, and sterols were detected in the aqueous extract of MERV20-1 strain using these residue-based cultivation media. The presence of these metabolites in the fungal extracts was an indication of their potential medicinal and industrial applications. All extracts of MERV20-1 on these wastes as cultivation media showed potent antioxidant activity represented by reducing power, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), metal chelating capacity, and 2,2′-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) along with the potent fibrinolytic activity. The priority of these agro-industrial residue-based cultures for the production of the most phytochemicals, lipids, and antioxidants was in the order of banana peel, followed by wheat germ cake, almond cake, pomegranate peel, tangerine peel, and rice bran. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy of the absorption spectrum confirmed the presence of aliphatic and aromatic amines, alkane, alcohol, phenol, amide, nitro, phosphate, carboxylic, ether, ketone, and halogen compounds in aqueous extracts of MERV20-1. The current work indicates that this fungus can be useful for a variety of pharmaceutical and therapeutic purposes using agro-residues as a low-cost renewable production media followed by extraction in hot water which is the most available and low-cost solvent.</p>
