摘要

To this day, gender still plays a rather marginal role both in early Holocaust research and in current Gedenkstättenpädagogik (memorial education). This desideratum is addressed by current research that uses ethnographic research in French and German memorial sites to examine how gendered remembrance is (re-)produced in knowledge transfer. Based on empirical material, the article aims to identify two main dynamics: on the one hand, the continued invisibility of gender-specific (female and queer) experiences in the context of remembrance culture and, on the other, the possibility of changing perspectives that can contribute to the development of a gender-reflexive perspective on remembrance. The research is discussed against the background of theoretical assumptions from gender studies and the sociology of memory. For a diverse perspective on remembering, we propose the concept of doing gendered memory, which takes gender seriously as a category and acknowledges its construction in the past and present: Gender is a fundamental category for the mediation of the Holocaust on the one hand and for coping with current gender-specific violence on the other.
