<p>Many factors contribute to the slow progress in achieving good status under the Water Framework Directive. One maybe overlooked aspect in Germany is the tightening of national assessment criteria. This will be illustrated with an example. A zero percent success rate for chemical status and 9 percent of water bodies in good ecological condition might finally lead to fatalism, since the targets are not likely to be achieved even in the long term. Therefore, an adjustment to the assessment level of other EU member states is urgently needed. A LAWA-working group with the aim of clarifying differences in methodological and systemic factors of the German assessment procedures in order to examine possibilities for adaptation in line with EU legal requirements has been established in spring 2026.</p>
