<p>The DWA Standard series 102 describes the current state of the art for managing and treating stormwater runoff. With the introduction of the water balance check according to DWA Standard M 102-4, the aim is to regulate the water balance of a residential area in such a way that it comes close to that of a similar undeveloped area. This article describes the requirements of the water balance check, gives an overview of the first practical experiences and, in particular, highlights open questions regarding the implementation of the check as well as the municipal and water management execution.</p>
