<p>In respect to protect and foster fish populations in the Danube catchment a workshop “ecology and hydropower” was held in 2025. The large hydropower operators within the Danube catchment chose a population approach to protect fish populations and verify these approaches through scientific assessments and targeted protective measures. They aimed to fill knowledge gaps on fish species and offer long-term solutions. In the population-based strategies, efforts are being made to conserve and manage endangered species in the region, necessitating in filling of knowledge gaps on local fish species and provide long-term solutions in the heavily modified river basins to meet the requirements of the water framework directive goals. Multiple measures are being implemented and are verified and supported by a scientific assessment and modelling in aiming to determine population size, reproductive rates, genetic diversity, migration behavior and hydropower impact, applying scientific methods to implement and enforce beneficial protective actions within the population approach. Almost all discussed projects are in heavily modified water bodies (HMWB).</p>

In respect to protect and foster fish populations in the Danube catchment a workshop “ecology and hydropower” was held in 2025. The large hydropower operators within the Danube catchment chose a population approach to protect fish populations and verify these approaches through scientific assessments and targeted protective measures. They aimed to fill knowledge gaps on fish species and offer long-term solutions.
