<p>Using a specially constructed barotrauma chamber, different larval and juvenile stages of representative European river fish species (grayling, perch, nase, roach) were systematically exposed to pressure profiles common in hydropower turbines. Significant species- and stage-specific differences in damage rates were observed, with developmental stage and swim bladder type having a significant influence on the damage. Significant injuries of surface-adapted fish could be observed at nadirs below 50 kPa. Mortality rates determined for larvae and young-of-the-year fish ranged between 0% (grayling larval stage 1/2) and 8.2% (nase larval stage) at full turbine load with significantly lower mortalities at partial load.</p>
