<p>With the North Rhine-Westphalian (NRW) Hydrometeorology monitoring network concept, a structured monitoring network design for the systematic representative recording of precipitation was established in 2021 as part of a scientific analysis. The study area is characterized and requirements are described. On this basis, a required station density is defined, an area reference for the homogeneous distribution is determined and categories are introduced. After selecting and categorising the suitable stations, a minimum framework of measuring stations is created to generate a nationwide homogeneous precipitation data set.</p>
