<p>The failure of a dam can trigger a flood wave with catastrophic consequences for the downstream structural infrastructure and environment. Zoned earth- and rockfill dams with a central core can erode and breach due to overtopping. In the past, numerous dams have failed in this way, including the Derna and Abu Mansour dams in Libya in 2023. These dam failures led to a catastrophic flood wave that devastated the city of Derna and claimed more than ten thousand lives. This article presents a new method for estimating flood waves after breaching of zoned dams for emergency planning purposes, which is based on systematic model experiments.</p>
