<p>Optimization models improve operational decision support in reservoir management, especially for extreme events. Optimization models are also used to determine filling curves and to develop dam operation plans. Linear and convex optimization problems can be solved efficiently using exact mathematical optimization methods; heuristic methods do not place specific requirements on the optimization problem, but do not guarantee to find the global optimum. To resolve conflicts of different use functions, weighting factors and priorities can be assigned to the operating objectives. </p>
