摘要

Background

The transition from inpatient psychiatric treatment to the domestic environment is a great challenge for patients and caregivers. In particular, the first few days after discharge are perceived by them as a burden. The aspects that are most important for patients and caregivers during this phase have not been sufficiently researched.

Aim

To describe important aspects of the transition from inpatient psychiatric treatment to the home environment from the perspective of patients and caregivers.

Methods

Semi-structured guided interviews with 12 patients and caregivers were analyzed using Kuckartz’s structuring qualitative content analysis.

Results

Patients and caregivers identified several important aspects of the transition from inpatient psychiatric treatment to the home environment, including participatory collaboration with professionals, continuity of care and daily life after discharge. Other important aspects included support from the social environment, and dealing with responsibility and self-care.

Conclusion

The transition to the home environment can be supported by continuity of care, by cross-sectoral and intermediate care services and participative collaboration between patients, relatives and professionals.
