Background <p>Primary care is essential for functioning healthcare systems. In Austria, general practitioners dominate, while other countries such as Norway rely on academically trained nurses in community health nursing (CHN). In Austria, initial steps are being taken to integrate CHN, including pilot projects in various municipalities to test their potential in primary care.</p> Aim <p>The aim was to survey and assess the importance and scope of CHN competencies in health and care management and advanced clinical skills in Austria.</p> Method <p>A&#xa0;total of 15&#xa0;interviews were conducted with experts from various areas of the social and health care system.</p> Results <p>Health and care management skills in combination with advanced clinical skills play a&#xa0;decisive role on several levels. On the one hand the CHNs must be able to grasp complex health situations holistically and derive the appropriate measures from them. On the other hand, in-depth nursing skills in the nursing area form a&#xa0;supporting and central pillar of daily work.</p> Conclusion <p>The theoretical and practical training of CHN should be geared towards dealing with complex situations and take a&#xa0;holistic approach. This means that in addition to in-depth nursing skills, the focus should also be on developing skills in evidence-based thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration and individual patient care.</p>

Background

Primary care is essential for functioning healthcare systems. In Austria, general practitioners dominate, while other countries such as Norway rely on academically trained nurses in community health nursing (CHN). In Austria, initial steps are being taken to integrate CHN, including pilot projects in various municipalities to test their potential in primary care.

Aim

The aim was to survey and assess the importance and scope of CHN competencies in health and care management and advanced clinical skills in Austria.

Method

A total of 15 interviews were conducted with experts from various areas of the social and health care system.

Results

Health and care management skills in combination with advanced clinical skills play a decisive role on several levels. On the one hand the CHNs must be able to grasp complex health situations holistically and derive the appropriate measures from them. On the other hand, in-depth nursing skills in the nursing area form a supporting and central pillar of daily work.

Conclusion

The theoretical and practical training of CHN should be geared towards dealing with complex situations and take a holistic approach. This means that in addition to in-depth nursing skills, the focus should also be on developing skills in evidence-based thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration and individual patient care.
