摘要

Entry-level nurses are confronted with high levels of strain during their first year of professional practice. They experience a mismatch between the professional values they were taught in study and the values they get to experience in practice, which can lead to shock-like reactions. The aim of this study was to investigate the needs and the need of support of entry-level nurses in managing strain at work in various stages of transition according to Duchscher (2008) during the first year of professional practice in Switzerland. As part of the qualitative analysis, individual interviews were conducted using a semistructured interview guide and analyzed. The results from 15 individual interviews show a strong need for structured induction and continuous support from experienced professionals in order to develop confidence and competence in the professional role. The need for adequate preparation for the prevailing working conditions, more practical training and more support are essential for a successful career start and in dealing with the workload.
