Recent progress in valorization of agro-food wastes in alignment with United Nations sustainable development goals

Agro-food wastes are dumped in landfills or burned without treatment, impacting soil, air, and water. Therefore, ever-increasing environmental issues, unplanned waste treatment and depletion of natural resources has led to an increase in agro-food wastes for value-added products. The 17 integrated Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations promise a sustainable future for humanity through economic growth, human well-being and environmental sustainability. The valorisation of these wastes for food supplements, bioenergy, bioplastics, biochar, industrial chemicals/products, and biofuels using green technologies is aligned with the sustainable development goals. The review aims to influence stakeholders’ interest in adopting a comprehensive approach to agro-food waste management that will contribute to the sustainable development goals and foster a vibrant circular bioeconomy. The strategies for identification, evaluation, and economic utilization of agro-food wastes with applications varying from bioactive compounds extraction, bio-energy, biodegradable packaging, industrial products and sustainable farming. Embracing the essence of sustainable development goals for practical and sustainable waste valorisation into value-added products, water treatment, and clean energy for human welfare and environmental health will pave the way for future research.
