Green infrastructure for urban climate mitigation and adaptation: methods, strategies, and typology selection based on ecosystem services

Urban areas are increasingly vulnerable to climate-related threats, such as rising temperatures, flooding, and the intensification of urban heat islands. Green infrastructure has emerged as a multifunctional, nature-based solution that enhances climate resilience while providing key ecosystem services. This study conducts a systematic Literature review following the PRISMA framework to examine how green infrastructure typologies have been implemented to support urban climate adaptation. A total of 43 peer-reviewed articles, serving as the data source for this review, were analyzed based on predefined eligibility criteria. The study introduces a normalized matrix that links specific green infrastructure typologies (such as green roofs, rain gardens, and urban forests) to regulating ecosystem services (such as flood control and temperature regulation), helping guide decision-making in diverse urban contexts. The matrix provides a novel, scalable tool for urban planners and policymakers to match local environmental demands with appropriate green infrastructure strategies. Results highlight a growing interest in green infrastructure since 2019, but also reveal ongoing challenges such as high maintenance demands, space constraints, and lack of integrated planning. This research offers practical insights and methodological contributions to support sustainable, evidence-based urban development in the face of climate change.
