Combined use of electrochemical, dissolved air flotation, and microfiltration in the treatment of offshore produced water

This study investigated the efficiency of integrated electro-physicochemical treatment approaches for the removal of water-soluble organics from oilfield produced water. The performance of individual and combined applications of electrochemical processes, dissolved air flotation, and microfiltration was assessed using real oilfield produced water under practical treatment conditions. Results demonstrated that individual treatment processes exhibited limited efficiency, whereas their combined application significantly enhanced overall performance. Highest treatment efficiency was achieved with the integrated electrochemical processes, dissolved air flotation and microfiltration system, which resulted in a 31.6% reduction in oil content, 98% turbidity removal, and a 13.4-fold increase in membrane permeate flux. The incorporation of electro-oxidative treatment, aimed at inducing chemical transformations in water-soluble organics and modifying their polarity, played a critical role in significantly improving flotation performance. The study demonstrates the synergy between processes in oilfield produced water treatment and proposes an efficient hybrid configuration potentially applicable on an industrial scale for managing offshore oil industry platform effluent.
