Utilization of agricultural waste compost as a green roof substrates for Senecio maritimus, Hedera helix, Vinca minor

Green roofs and walls are increasingly common in Iran, where potted outdoor flowers are used for their development. Introducing economically viable organic and inorganic substrate compounds of local origin becomes necessary for supporting these plant varieties. To achieve this objective, we conducted a randomized complete block experiment examining the effects of five growth media (T1: 80% peat + 20% perlite, T2: 50% Azolla compost + 40% peanut shell compost + 10% perlite, T3: 50% Azolla compost + 40% peanut shell compost + 10% zeolite, T4: 30% Azolla compost + 30% peanut shell compost + 30% tea waste compost + 10% perlite, and T5: 30% Azolla compost + 30% peanut shell compost + 30% tea waste compost + 10% zeolite) on Senecio maritimus, Hedera helix, and Vinca minor. Introducing economically viable organic and inorganic substrate compounds of local origin becomes necessary for supporting these plant varieties. Our findings from cultivating the analyzed plants in pots under green roof conditions revealed that substrates containing Azolla compost, tea waste, and peanut shells outperformed the control regarding growth factors and leaf nutrients. In conclusion, we recommend using growth media that combines compost and zeolite to establish green roofs with the investigated plant species.
