Possible of soil organic carbon and carbon stock in orchard for climate mitigation

Assessment of soil organic carbon (SOC) is beneficial knowledge to climate change mitigation. Thailand lacks information on SOC accumulation in orchard systems. Durian is a potential plant in many regions of Thailand and is widely planted in the south and east. Therefore, this work studies soil organic carbon distribution in different ages of durian trees in Rayong province, eastern Thailand. The research area included durian orchard soil, tree biomass, and carbon storage in trees. We obtained soil samples through stratified sampling. We collected soil samples from durian orchards at depths of 0–25 and 25–50 cm. The land use in this region is agricultural and follows a similar pattern. This work randomly selected a soil sample from a soil unit polygon for sampling. We analyzed the entire sample (20 samples) for bulk density, soil texture, soil pH, total nitrogen content (TN), and organic carbon (OM). At 15 years old, Durain Trees Orchard had the soil organic carbon of each depth at 0.02 and 0.01, and at 7 years old, 0.03 and 0.02%, respectively. At 15 years old, OM and TN were lower in the Durian Trees orchard. The soil pH and bulk density values were not different. Durian tree biomass and carbon storage in the 15-year-old durian tree orchard are much higher than those of 7-year-old trees.
