Dementia with Lewy Bodies: Updates in Diagnosis and Management
摘要
There has been growing recognition of Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), reflected in its inclusion in the DSM-5 as Major Neurocognitive Disorder with Lewy Bodies. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of DLB, including its epidemiology, pathology, diagnosis, and management.
Recent FindingsSkin biopsies for detection of phosphorylated alpha synuclein (P-SYN) is being studied as a diagnostic tool for diagnosis of synucleinopathies. Quantitative measures of P-SYN deposition might correlate with disease severity. With regard to treatment, ambroxol is currently under investigation as a potential new pharmacologic agent for DLB.
SummaryLewy Body Dementias (LBDs), encompassing both Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) and Parkinson’s Disease Dementia (PDD), are the second most common neurodegenerative dementias in individuals over 65. Diagnosis of DLB is challenging and often delayed due to the subtle presentation of motor and non-motor symptoms. We provide a comprehensive review on clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, and management with the goal of improving recognition and quality of life of patients with DLB.
