Driving Evaluations: When to Take the Keys and How to Navigate the Impact with Your Patient
摘要
Driving is an important facet of everyday life for many people, yet most older adults will need to stop driving at some point. Clinicians, especially primary care providers, must be able to guide older adults in the decision to stop driving. This review aimed to evaluate the current landscape of literature on the assessment of driving safety in older adults to best guide clinicians.
Recent FindingsA sample pathway is presented to help clinicians consider when to screen for driving safety and when to refer older adults for comprehensive driving evaluations. While there is significant variability in driving assessments, an on-road evaluation is currently considered to be the gold standard. Strategies for communicating about driving cessation and subsequent follow-up are presented.
SummarySeveral resources exist for clinicians, older adults, and families to help assess driving safety and prepare older adults for driving cessation. The literature emphasizes the importance of proactive planning for driving retirement, rather than just considering fitness-to-drive assessments, and the importance of alternate transportation planning. Future research is needed to determine how new technologies can help in the assessment of driving safety as well as help older adults continue to drive for as long as possible.
