Potential uses of discarded carrot seeds: hydropriming enhances the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of seed extracts

Seeds contain large amounts of essential nutrients and bioactive compounds. Despite the substantial production of valuable seeds annually, low-quality seeds or those exceeding the warranty period are detected during inspection. A strategy for utilizing non-commercial grade (NG) or discarded seeds in an eco-friendly manner is urgently required. This study utilized NG seeds, which are normally excluded from plant propagation, as biological materials to evaluate their potential contribution to sustainable agriculture. Ethanol extraction-based hydropriming (HP) pretreatment was applied under different conditions to increase NG seed activity, and was found to increase antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. No significant differences were observed based on HP temperature. However, the bioactive content and activity increased with the duration of HP. NG seeds pretreated with HP for 48 h exhibited similar activity to commercial-grade (CG) and CG + HP-treated seeds. To our best knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating that kaempferol can be biosynthesized from carrot seeds only after HP treatment. Our findings can be used to determine the potential value of discarded vegetable seeds and evaluate their use as biological materials. It can also be used as a strategy for sustainable agriculture using discarded vegetable seeds.
