CRISPR-Cas9 system: a possible “Savior” of scented Katarni rice

The adaptability of rice (Oryza sativa L.) to various environmental conditions has made it a significant staple food crop in many countries. There is a constant need for new varieties with improved traits such as resistance to different stresses, higher yield, and better taste and nutritional value due to its economic and social importance. Bhagalpuri Katarni rice is a renowned fragrant variety hailing from the Bhagalpur region in Bihar, India, well-known for its distinct aroma and subtle flavor. Bhagalpuri Katarni rice confronts significant challenges including tall stature, susceptibility to pests and diseases, severely impacting both yield and quality, and is on the brink of extinction. Rice has a small genome size and many genomic resources, making it a more feasible crop for genetic modification. While traditional breeding methods have been important in producing desirable varieties, they are unable to meet the current high food demands. Novel breeding approaches, like genome editing tools (GETs), specifically the CRISPR-Cas9 system, offer high efficiency and can overcome the limitations associated with transgenesis and classical breeding. We aim to explore genome editing to enhance the yield, and aroma of Bhagalpuri Katarni rice, safeguarding its unique qualities and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. This study focuses on the use of CRISPR-Cas9 based genome editing tool for improving economic traits in rice, especially in scented Katarni rice grown in Bhagalpur districts of Bihar, India, and provides an overview of its processes. It also compares CRISPR-Cas9 to other gene-editing methods, such as the recently discovered Cas variants.
