Effectiveness of DSMES (Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support) on glycemic control and quality of life among people living with diabetes
摘要
Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) is an ongoing, evidence-based approach that empowers individuals with diabetes to effectively manage their condition and improve clinical outcomes, including reductions in HbA1c levels. Despite its proven benefits, DSMES remains underutilized due to various challenges.
ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of DSMES on glycaemic control and quality of life(QoL) among people with type 2 diabetes(T2DM).
MethodsA randomized interventional study was conducted from Jan–June 2025 among 180 participants with T2DM. Group 1 (n = 90) underwent intensive counselling on diet, education, SMBG, regular exercise/yoga with stress counselling and were followed up on the 7th and 45th days and after 3 and 6 months. Group 2 (n = 90) underwent standard counselling and were followed up after 3 and 6 months. DSMES and WHO-QoL questionnaires were used to collect data at baseline and follow ups. A1C was evaluated.
ResultsThe mean age of the participants was 52.6 years. Group 1 showed a significant reduction in A1C% (baseline vs 3rd month 10.6 ± 1.4 vs 7.7 ± 1.0, p < 0.001). In group 2, it was 10.8 ± 1.6 to 9.9 ± 1.3. The participants doing exercise increased to 67.1% and 87.1% from 29.4% in group 1 at the 3rd and 6th months. An increase was noted in people performing SMBG (44.7% vs. 76.5%) in group 1 compared to group 2 (49.4% vs. 58.8%). Group 1 showed a significant increase in intake of protein (18.5%) and a decrease in carbohydrate (21.4%) and fat (23.1%). Group 2 did not show a significant difference in their diet intake at follow ups from baseline. Perceived stress levels decreased by 47.4% in group 1. The quality of life of the participants improved, which was highly significant in group 1.
ConclusionThis study proved that DSMES resulted in an improvement in diabetes control and quality of life.
