摘要

Cereals such as wheat are an important component of the human diet, usually contaminated by mycotoxins at varying levels, posing serious and acute chronic health risks to humans. This study investigated the efficiency of date palm kernel powder, an inexpensive and abundant agricultural product, in eliminating aflatoxins (AFs) and ochratoxin A (OTA) from wheat intended for human consumption. FE-SEM, FT-IR, XRD, and EDX analysis revealed a porous, non-crystalline structure with abundant oxygenated functional groups. Up to 80% of OTA and 30–50% of AFs were removed from spiked wheat samples (5–10 ng g⁻¹) using optimized conditions; 100 mg bio-adsorbent, pH ~ 6, 3 min contact time, and ambient temperature. The higher polarity of OTA enhanced its adsorption compared to AFs, influenced by molecular structure and interactions with the lignocellulosic components of the bio-adsorbent. These results show that with modest efficacy against AFs, date palm kernel powder is a sustainable and efficient adsorbent that reduces OTA in wheat, therefore improving food safety.
