Innovative Uses of Iron Ore Tailings in Sustainable Concrete: An In-Depth Review of Achievements, Future Potential, and Strategic Directions

This study presents a thorough review of the potential utilization of iron ore tailings (IOTs), a by-product generated during the extraction of iron, as a sustainable resource for green concrete production. Although IOTs are often characterized by their low reactivity and associated environmental risks, they also exhibit valuable properties, including high iron content and inherent pozzolanic activity, which can be harnessed to enhance concrete formulations. The incorporation of IOTs into concrete not only mitigates the consumption of natural resources but also significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, leading to a more environmentally friendly construction process. This review assesses the current status of IOTs in the context of green concrete applications. It delves into the effects of IOTs on key aspects of the concrete hydration process, microstructural development, and mechanical performance. Furthermore, the transformative potential of IOTs is highlighted, shifting their perception from waste materials to valuable resources that contribute to sustainable construction practices. Additionally, the study identifies existing research gaps and challenges within the field, offering insightful recommendations for future investigations. By addressing these gaps, further exploration and innovation in the utilization of IOTs can be encouraged.
