Low-Temperature Fuel Cell Technology Development and Issues: An Overview
摘要
Low-temperature fuel cell technologies have emerged as transformative solutions for sustainable energy generation. These technologies are particularly suited for remote areas and off-grid applications, where conventional power systems are impractical due to cost or infrastructure limitations. However, the challenges for implementation of these technologies such as high manufacturing costs, cathode flooding, insufficient durability, and environmental safety concerns continue to hinder their large-scale deployment and commercialization. In this review, an overview comparison of various low-temperature fuel cell technologies based on their design, operational principles, and techno-economic aspects including main challenges such as manufacturing costs, cathode flooding, durability, and chemical safety are critically analyzed to highlight persistent barriers to commercialization. Furthermore, the study assesses the relative efficiency, environmental impact, and lifecycle costs of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The discussion also included underscore the potential of low-temperature fuel cells as a high efficiency, low-emission energy alternative, while also identifying actionable research directions for improving long-term viability. This comprehensive overview aims to provide researchers and industry professionals with insights into advancing the development and deployment of low-temperature fuel cell systems.
