<p>Paedogenetic gall midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) are serious pests that cause substantial yield losses in mushroom cultivations worldwide. Field surveys targeting gall midges in Japan have recently unveiled several paedogenetic species from decaying, fungus-infested woods and vines in natural environments, and a rearing technique of these gall midges was established in our previous study under laboratory conditions. One of the paedogenetic gall midge species obtained from a fallen vine of <i>Wisteria floribunda</i> (Fabaceae) decayed by&#xa0;the split gill mushroom <i>Schizophyllum commune</i> (Schizophyllaceae) was identified as <i>Mycophila speyeri</i> (Barnes, 1926) (Micromyinae: Aprionini) based on adult morphological traits as well as COI sequences. The sequence was 99.85% identical to that of a single specimen identified as <i>M. speyeri</i> from South Korea. We noticed slight morphological differences in the Japanese population of <i>M. speyeri</i> compared with European conspecific specimens, which calls for thorough studies of the taxonomy of <i>M. speyeri</i> and its congeners found in East Asia.</p>
