Condition monitoring of the Santa Chiara masonry arch bridge at Noto using observed seismic responses

The observed seismic behavior of a four-span masonry arch bridge is analyzed. The bridge is permanently monitored by means of an accelerometric measurement system, which recorded several far-field seismic events. Data are analyzed in both the time and frequency domains. The main dynamic characteristics are identified from several seismic events, and the changes in the resonance frequencies are pointed out. The results are compared with those obtained in the presence of ambient noise only. A finite element model has been set up on the basis of the ambient vibration analysis. No significant or irreversible changes in the dynamic behavior occurred during the monitoring period, demonstrating the structure substantial long-term stability. The study demonstrates how accurate dynamic monitoring can significantly contribute to the control of infrastructure throughout its useful life. The procedure used can be followed on a large scale on infrastructure.
