<p>The development of sunflower hybrids is limited by the narrow genetic base of the available maintainer lines, highlighting the importance of identifying and utilizing diverse sources of maintainer lines to sustain breeding progress. Despite this, studies exploring the extent and distribution of genetic variation within the maintainer gene pool remain limited and incomplete. In this study, the genetic diversity of 167 sunflower maintainer lines from India and the USDA, USA, was evaluated using a combined approach involving both morphological characterization and molecular marker analysis. A total of 37 agro-morphological traits were assessed, while molecular diversity was examined using 130 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers over two consecutive years in augmented block design with three checks viz<i>.,</i> CMS-17B, CMS-234B and ARM-243B. The results revealed substantial morphological and molecular variation, which effectively distinguished the maintainer lines. Cluster analyses based on morphological and molecular data showed no relationship between the clustering patterns and the eco-geographical origins of the genotypes. Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) values ranged from 0.4 (ORS-782) to 0.8 (ORS-1259), averaging 0.6, while the mean number of alleles per locus was 4.27, with a range of 2 to 9, indicating a considerable level of genetic diversity among the lines. This study has uncovered previously unexploited variability in sunflower and identified nine promising diverse maintainer lines viz., CMS-58B, CMS-59B, HA-64B, HA-65B, HA-89B, CMS-103B, HA-248B, ARM-249B and CMS-300B that may be utilized to achieve enhanced heterosis through hybridization.</p>
