Inter-population variability in phenotypic traits, meiotic aspects and gametic fertility of androecious Coccinia grandis (L.) Voigt. populations from North-west India

Morphological variation was studied in fourteen wild androecious populations of Coccinia grandis (2n = 24), a dioecious cucurbit having microscopically distinct sex chromosomes. Analysis of phenotypic traits of male populations growing in North-west India using one-way ANOVA revealed greater variability amongst populations than within populations. UPGMA clustering revealed two phenotypically distinct groups, cluster 1 having plants with small foliar and floral parts and cluster 2 having plants with larger parts. Most of the pollen mother cells (PMCs) had the 24 chromosomes paired into 11 homo- and one heteromorphic bivalent, with a few PMCs of these depicting translocation heteozygosity and/or hypo- (2n = 18, 20, 22) or hyperploidy (2n = 26–30). This is barring populations C31, C33 and C36 consistently having meiocytes with normal count and regular behavior. The percent deviant meiocytes of studied plants neither show clear relation with their robustness nor with growing altitudes. Plants with deviant PMCs showed proportionately reduced pollen viability.
