Assessing the genetic variation using simple sequence repeat markers and biochemical analysis of turkey berry (Solanum torvum Swartz.)

Turkey berry (Solanum torvum Swartz.) contains volatile compounds, that are valued in traditional medicine for treating inflammation, cough and other ailments. A detailed ion analyses and biochemical profiling was carried out in 20 turkey berry accessions. Genotypes such as St002, St010, St011, St014 and St019 exhibited higher antioxidant and tannin contents than other genotypes. Fourteen simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were used for DNA fingerprinting as well as for analyzing the genetic diversity among these wild accessions. With a PIC of 0.558, the marker EM145 exhibited the highest, whereas EMB01L13 showed the lowest (polymorphism information content) PIC (0.263) estimate. The average PIC estimate was modest (0.362). The twenty accessions of turkey berries were divided into four major clusters by the UPGMA dendrogram analysis. Genotypes namely, St018 / St006, St018 / St002, St014 / St008, St019 / St003, and St0015 / St008 showing excellent biochemical traits having considerable divergence can be used as potential parents to develop superior hybrids.
