Enzyme-crosslinked hyaluronic acid-based multifunctional hydrogel promotes diabetic wound healing

Bacterial infections, restricted cellular activity, and difficulty in vascular regeneration severely impede the healing efficiency of skin injuries in patients with diabetes, ultimately leading to the development of chronic ulcers. To promote skin wound healing in patients with diabetes, we constructed a multifunctional hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel using enzymatic cross-linking. The hydrogel provided a gentle environment for neoplastic cells in the wound. In addition, both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the ZIF-8-containing hydrogel effectively inhibited the growth of traumatized bacteria. Furthermore, the VEGF contained in the hydrogel promoted blood vessel regeneration in the wound. These results demonstrate that hyaluronic acid-based multifunctional hydrogels serve as an effective dressing for the treatment of diabetic wounds.
