摘要

Background

Menstrual cups are effective menstrual management products that can empower women and improve their quality of life. Despite their advantages, usage remains limited. This study aimed to assess awareness, usage, and attitudes regarding menstrual cups among undergraduate female students.

Methodology

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 249 female MBBS and BSc Nursing undergraduate students at a medical college in eastern India. Convenient sampling was used, inviting all students from the two courses at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Data were collected via a semi-structured questionnaire circulated as a Google Form and analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2021.

Results

Of the 249 students, 226 (90.8%) were aware of menstrual cups. However, only 18 (7.2%) were using them. Students demonstrated limited knowledge about the material used in cup manufacture, appropriate emptying time, and sterilization techniques. Two-thirds considered the cup a safe device, and just over 60% said they would recommend it to others. Besides being comfortable with sanitary napkins, the most commonly cited reason for non-usage, reported by 70% of participants, was discomfort with the menstrual cup.

Conclusion

Despite high awareness, menstrual cup usage among MBBS and Nursing students was low. Medical and nursing students, being more receptive to sustainable options, can be effectively targeted to promote adoption. As future health professionals, they have the potential to serve as change agents. Health education programs should be implemented to raise awareness and support proper menstrual hygiene practices, ultimately improving acceptance and use of menstrual cups.
