Exploring Scolymus hispanicus L. leaves as a source of natural therapeutics: nutritional, phytochemical, and pharmacological evaluations
摘要
Scolymus hispanicus L. is an edible medicinal plant known for its richness in bioactive phytochemicals and its potential health-promoting properties. The present study aimed to investigate the phytochemical composition and evaluate the antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-obesity potential of different extracts of S. hispanicus leaves. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, and other secondary metabolites. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis tentatively identified several phenolic compounds, with chlorogenic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and protocatechuic acid as major constituents. The extracts exhibited concentration-dependent antioxidant activity in DPPH, TAC, and FRAP assays, in addition to inhibitory effects against α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and pancreatic lipase enzymes. Among the tested extracts, the methanolic extract demonstrated the most notable biological activity, which may be associated with its relatively higher polyphenolic content, particularly phenolic acids (115.37 ± 6.71 mg GAE/g), and flavonoids (84.73 ± 1.55 mg QE/g). The results suggest that S. hispanicus represents a promising natural source of bioactive compounds and has potential applications in future studies related to oxidative stress and metabolic disorders. However, further biochemical and toxicological studies are needed to validate these biological effects.
