Exploring the mechanisms of action of polyphenols in the treatment of cervical cancer

Globally, cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer and remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in women. In this context, plant-derived compounds, especially polyphenols, are attracting increasing interest as potential therapeutic agents for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, with their various anticancer mechanisms. Interest in the study of dietary phytochemicals such as Flavonoids, Phenolic acids, Stilbenes, Lignans, Anthocyanidins and Proanthocyanidins has returned as a result of recent emphasis on the significance of nutrition and its relationship to particular forms of neoplasia. Polyphenols have demonstrated a broad range of cellular effects: they can hinder carcinogens from entering the targeted sites, aid in reactive molecule detoxification, enhance the removal of transformed cells, boost immune surveillance, and most importantly, they can affect tumor suppressors and inhibit cellular proliferation, thereby interfering with the steps involved in the development of cancer. Since they disrupt the essential processes of cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), Immunomodulation, Epigenetic modifications, migration and metastasis, certain dietary polyphenols have the potential to be very effective in the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, according to the studies. Polyphenols inhibit the proliferation of HPV-infected cervical cells by inducing apoptosis, causing cell-cycle arrest, blocking DNA synthesis, and modulating signaling pathways. Numerous benefits of polyphenols as chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agents for cervical cancer are highlighted in the review. Due to their profound influence on gene modification, polyphenols have a great deal of promise for preventing cervical cancer. Based on their effects on molecular signaling pathways and gene regulation, polyphenols may be important in both delaying the onset of cervical cancer and possibly affecting the disease progression.
