The management orientation for adoption of additive manufacturing (AM) in large Indian public sector firms

Additive Manufacturing (AM) holds potential to change and advance the efficiency and sustainability of production in large Indian public sector companies. Although this is a promising potential, there exists a scarcity of knowledge about the management orientation that enables effective adoption of AM, whether in the context of mass production or customised production. The study will attempt to provide managerial insights and approaches of sustainable and reliable AM integration. In order to access the efficiency key input parameters used in the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) of 20 decision-making units (DMUs) in Tata Motors on AM adoption, cost-efficiency, and resource use and production flexibility were employed in a two-stage DEA. The structured questionnaire completed by 150 managers, executives and employees engaged in activities related to AM helped to collect data. Results indicated an efficiency score of 0.82 to 0.92, an average value of 0.88, which can be discussed as a best practice and needs improvement. The results show that companies which show greater production flexibility and resource utilisation efficiency guarantee better results in terms of AM adoption. The research also notes that such challenges as the expensive equipment and the barrier to standardisation have to be addressed in a specific way within the management. On the basis of these cognisance’s, feasible suggestions are advanced to enfranchise AM apprehension regimes and streamline manufacturing processes. The present study can add a strong model to evaluate the adoption of AM in the manufacturing industry within a government organisation and provide effective suggestions to policymakers and practitioners interested in improving competitiveness and sustainability.
