Elaboration and characterization of bioactive films obtained through the incorporation of oiticica oil (Licania rigida Benth) in a matrix of corn starch and sodium alginate

Natural edible packaging are multifunctional materials that not only ensure protection but also contribute to consumer health. In addition, to playing a passive protective role, bioactive films can promote health benefits for consumers. This research developed and characterized bioactive films obtained by incorporating oiticica oil (OO) into a matrix of sodium alginate and corn starch. Films were obtained through the casting method, using concentrations of 1.5% (w/v) sodium alginate, 1.5% (w/v) corn starch, glycerol, Tween 80, and OO at concentrations of 0 (control), 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5%. The films were then characterized in terms of color, opacity, thickness, mechanical and barrier properties, morphology, thermogravimetry, toxicity, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. A uniform film structure was observed. The addition of OO improved the homogeneity of the microstructure, as well as thermal and mechanical resistance, reduced permeability and luminosity, and increased yellow color, saturation and opacity index, in addition to presenting low toxicity and antioxidant potential. No antimicrobial activity was observed against the strains S. aureus and E. coli. The addition of OO in the preparation of the films improved food packaging quality, proving to be a possible effective alternative to synthetic plastic packaging in food applications.
