Study on structure and thermal stability properties of cellulose fibers derived from Nelumbo nucifera rhizome

A systematic analysis of characteristics of natural fiber derived from lotus stems is significant towards developing biocompatible and functional biomass products. This research explores the physical and chemical properties, microstructure, crstallinity and thermal stability of cellulosic fibers derived from lotus stem, via the process of alkali extraction followed by bleahing. The characteristics reveal cellulosic fibers to be lightweight and fine having crystallinity index of 63.4% and large crystallite size (3.0 nm) in comparison to cellulose from different natural sources. Peak deconvolution in addition to Segal’s method highlights the contribution of different planes in cellulose towards its crystallinity. High thermal stability of these cellulosic fibers (286.2 °C) compared to various other sources is a direct consequence of higher crystallinity, leaving little to no residue at the culmination of pyrolysis. A comprehensive analysis of the structure of lotus stem is included as well.
