Histopathological Diversity in Male Gall Bladder Lesions on Cholecystectomies in Indo-Gangetic Belt
摘要
Gallstone disease is a common surgical problem predominantly seen in females with higher prevalence rates in North India. The current study was designed to explore histopathological spectrum of male gallbladders in this high-risk Indo-Gangetic belt.
MethodsA retrospective observational study was conducted on the cholecystectomy specimens received in the Department of Pathology over 2-year period (Jan 2023–Dec 2024). Clinical details and histopathological data was retrieved from the records.
ResultOver a two-year period, 2,491 gallbladder specimens from cholecystectomy patients were examined, of which 383 (15.3%) were from male patients. The most prevalent histopathological finding in males was Chronic Cholecystitis identified in 267 cases (69.73%).The mean gallbladder wall thickness varied significantly with the greatest thickness observed in cases of Gallbladder Adenocarcinoma and Xanthogranulomatous Cholecystitis.
ConclusionTo conclude, this is the first study of its kind to focus on histopathological changes observed in male gallbladder specimens. Chronic cholecystitis followed by Cholesterolosis was most frequent. In male patients, several benign gallbladder conditions often present with radiological features such as significant wall thickening as seen in Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis, which closely resemble malignancy. Further focused studies on male gallbladder pathology, particularly in high-risk regions are warranted to enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve surgical planning.
