<p>In oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients, lymph node metastasis is the single most important prognostic factor. Survival rate falls by 50% once regional metastasis occurs. Natural killer (NK) cells are bone marrow derived lymphocytes which can target and lyse malignant cells with their inherent cytotoxic capability and also through ADCC (Antibody Dependant Cellular Cytotoxicity). Thus, NK cells may have a role in preventing metastasis of oral cancer, and hence in its prognosis.&#xa0;Number of NK cells was determined in tumour tissue and lymph node of 50 oral cancer patients using IHC for CD56.&#xa0;There was significant correlation between stage of tumour and NK cell number in tumour tissue, with NK cell number being more in early-stage tumour (pT1 &amp; pT2) compared to advanced stage tumour (pT3 &amp; pT4). Also, NK cell number in the metastatic lymph node was higher in early stage tumour (pT1 &amp; pT2) than in advanced stage tumour (pT3 &amp; pT4).&#xa0;As the number of NK cells in both tumour tissue and metastatic lymph node is higher in early-stage tumour showing gradual decrease with advancement in the stage of tumour, we conclude that NK cell is a prognostic indicator in oral cancer patients.</p>
