摘要

Introduction

Self-acceptance of sexuality includes an understanding and acceptance of having a sexual minoritized (SM) identity and it is related to positive psychological well-being’s indicators. There is no measure of self-acceptance for the Portuguese SM population. The current study aimed to translate, validate, and explore the psychometric characteristics of the European Portuguese version of the Self-Acceptance of Sexuality Inventory (SASI-PT).

Methods

This study comprised 357 Portuguese SM people, recruited between November 2022 and April 2023, and assessed the SASI-PT construct validity (factor structure, invariance measurement, convergent, and discriminant analysis) and reliability (alpha, composite and maximal reliability, and stability).

Results

The final version of the SASI-PT, like its original version, presented two subscales (self-acceptance and difficulties with self-acceptance) with good values of adjustment, scalar measurement, and good reliability. Additionally, the SASI-PT presented significantly small to moderate correlations with sexual-minority process, resilience factors, and psychological well-being outcomes.

Conclusions

The findings of this study suggest that the SASI-PT is a valid and reliable measure to assess self-acceptance of sexuality in Portuguese SM people and its use may be helpful in both clinical and research contexts.

Policy implications

The versatile utilization of the SASI-PT can improve the knowledge of SM experiences and contribute to changes aimed at decreasing harmful behaviors and increasing public health.
